Products to disinfect contaminated surfaces

1. SODIUM HYPOCHLORITE (SANITARY WATER):

  • The coronavirus can be effectively removed with 0.1% sodium hypochlorite. Sodium hypochlorite is the active ingredient in bleach available in supermarkets and other commercial establishments. In Brazil, sanitary water is sold at a concentration of 2.0 to 2.5%. Considering the 2% concentration, to prepare one liter of 0.1% sodium hypochlorite, using bleach, proceed as follows:
    Measure 50 ml of bleach, equivalent to a third of a glass of lagoon (American);
    Before preparing, check the shelf life of sanitary water;
     Place the sanitary water in a 1 liter container with a lid and fill the volume with filtered water up to the 1 liter mark;
    Cover the container and shake gently to mix the water and the sanitary water;
    Keep away from light and use it in the shortest possible time;
     The contact time to achieve disinfection is ten minutes.

1. SODIUM HYPOCHLORITE (SANITARY WATER):

  • Objects and surfaces where sodium hypochlorite cannot be used: Hypochlorite is corrosive and discolors some materials. For situations where its use is contraindicated, the following options are available: 70% alcohol and hydrogen peroxide. Hydrogen peroxide is the active ingredient in hydrogen peroxide. Disinfection of inanimate objects and surfaces can also be done with 70% alcohol and 0.5% hydrogen peroxide. It is important to clarify that alcohol for cleaning for domestic use has a concentration of 46.2o INPM, which is less than 70% and, therefore, it is not used for disinfection against coronavirus. The contact time to achieve disinfection with 70% alcohol is 10 minutes.

2. OXYGEN WATER (Hydrogen Peroxide):

  • The recommended concentration is 0.5%. In pharmacies there is hydrogen peroxide in 10 volumes, which corresponds to a concentration of 3% (w / w). To prepare 1 liter of 0.5% hydrogen peroxide solution, the procedure is as follows:

    • Measure 166 ml of hydrogen peroxide 10 volumes (about 01 bottle and a half of 100 ml);
    •  Place the hydrogen peroxide in a 01 liter container with a lid and fill it with filtered water up to the 1 liter mark;
    • Stay away from light and use it in the shortest possible time;
    • Before preparing, check the expiration date of the hydrogen peroxide you have at home;
    • The contact time to achieve disinfection is ten minutes.

OBSERVATIONS

  1. The 70% alcohol preparation presented in this material is a homemade preparation, whose approximate desired concentration is between 60-70%, the corrections of the alcoholic degree by temperature were not considered. For calculation purposes, it was considered that the alcoholic strength of ethyl alcohol should be at least 94.7 ° GL or 94.7% (v / v) at 15 ° C. Under these conditions, the exact measurement would be 813 ml, without correction of the degree alcoholic, for simplicity it is recommended to measure 800 ml and dilute to 1000 ml. Measurements are approximate to allow home preparation.
  2.  Benzalkonium chloride 0.05-0.2% and chlorhexidine digluconate (0.02%) are expensive and less effective, they were tested in a study by Kampf et al 2020 against the coronavirus. However, these products are not on the U.S. list. Environmental Protection Agency, so they were not listed above.
